Join our Nurse Externship program at the #1 hospital in Wisconsin!

UW Health Nurse Externs will provide remarkable nursing care alongside their RN Clinical Coach during an 10-week immersion experience in one of our inpatient hospitals or ambulatory care settings.  This opportunity will enhance your clinical knowledge and provide valuable, direct patient care experience and mentorship at our Magnet-designated, academic medical center in Madison, WI. This program is for nursing students who are graduating between December 2024 and June 2025.    

Description:

  • Full time, paid 10 week nurse externship program starting May, 28th 2024.
  • Application deadline is January, 7th 2024.  Early applications encouraged.

Program Highlights

  • Nurse Externships are available at University Hospital, American Family Children's Hospital, East Madison Hospital and ambulatory clinical sites.
  • A broad range of clinical specialty areas are included in this program. A nurse recruiter will discuss your preference for clinical placement during your interview.
  • Nurse Externs will work alongside a RN Clinical Coach and will perform hands-on nursing care.

Education:

Minimum: 

  • Current enrollment in a Baccalaureate School of Nursing program AND 
  • Successful completion of two clinical courses as a nursing student  OR  
  • UW Health Employees ONLY: Current enrollment in an Associate Degree in Nursing program AND 
  • Successful completion of two clinical courses as a nursing student 

Preferred: 

  • Current enrollment in a Baccalaureate School of Nursing program AND  
  • Successful completion of two clinical courses as a nursing student 

Work Experience: 

Preferred:  Experience working in a patient care role (such as Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant) 

Licenses and Certifications:

Minimum:  Current CPR/BLS Certification

Work Schedule:

90% FTE. 36 hours per week.  Nurse extern schedules will be assigned based on the schedule of their RN Clinical Coach.  8 and/or 12-hour day/evening or evening/night shifts with a weekend rotation is required. Hours may vary based on the operational needs of the department.

Pay:

This is a paid externship.  Shift differentials will be applied for evening, night and weekend shifts.
