VIAVI Engineering Development Program
We are looking for a creative and motivated Senior Optical Scientist whose focus will be to model, design, and fabricate RPC Photonics Engineered Diffusers™, beam-shaping components, and diffractive optical elements. The successful candidate will interact closely with the Director of R&D and various work centers within the company as well as customers and vendors. The majority of the design work involves the determination of surface structures in which a desired intensity or irradiance pattern is specified, with the aim of defining a structured optical surface that, when illuminated by a specified optical light source, e.g. a laser source or VCSEL array, produces the desired light distribution. The candidate will have detailed knowledge of physical optics, electromagnetic theory, and the propagation of electromagnetic wave propagation through various media, including polarization effects. The candidate will be responsible to work with a multi-disciplinary team that will utilize the design data to produce prototype and production masters using gray-scale photolithographic systems. The ideal candidate will also have a working knowledge of photolithographic processes, including photoresist preparation and processing and be familiar with optical testing methods to directly measure microscopic optical surfaces as well as functional measurement techniques of the resulting light distribution produced by micro-structured optical surfaces.
This position is located in Rochester, New York. VIAVI's Rochester facility designs and manufactures products for applications in 3D sensing, micro refractive and diffractive optics for consumer electronics, government, healthcare and automotive markets.
Key Roles and Responsibilities :
· Design and modeling of surface-relief diffusers surfaces that produce specified scatter distributions.
· Work directly with manufacturing in the prototyping and production of surface-relief optical components.
· Modeling of grayscale photolithographic process for computer-aided design of surface-relief optical components.
· Modeling of micro-replication and reactive-ion etching processes for computer-aided design of surface-relief optical components.
· Operate, calibrate, and improve optical metrology equipment.
· Support various work centers with modeling and data processing needs.
· Work with customers as technical resource and assist in the creation of specification documents and execution of project plans to produce and achieve the target project specifications.
· Translate tolerance specifications to process parameters and new or existing test procedures and/or equipment to verify achievement of stated tolerances or other required performance.
· Develop models to evaluate optical performance when direct metrology is not available or difficult.
· Develop methods to utilize existing commercial optical design software in the modeling of complex surface structures used for optical beam shaping.
· Develop software tools in support of various work centers for evaluation and qualification of optical components.
Success Indicators :
· Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to interface with all levels of staff and leadership.
· Analytical thinker; detail oriented; problem solver.
· Motivated self-starter with the ability to both work independently and with cross-functional teams, and to work effectively in multi-disciplinary environment.
· Capable of working on multiple distinct projects in addition to normal day to day responsibilities and work in a fast-paced environment.
