Technical Co-op (Part-Time) (Architecture)

Technical Co-op candidates will be key players in executing the GTI Energy Roadmap in solving global energy challenges by innovating and developing new capabilities driven by market demand. GTI Energy is seeking top-performing undergraduates actively pursuing an associate degree in a technical area of study for this part-time, engineering/technical role, which will begin with a select 1 to 2-year, engaging, high-visibility, Technical Co-op Program that will prepare the selected candidates with in-depth, hands-on experience across a broad range of energy technology development and implementation activities both inside and outside of the laboratories.

This role will support our Laboratory & Bench Scale and Pilot Plant Engineering Operations groups. Technical Co-ops will work closely with cross functional teams assigned to each project, leveraging the knowledge of specialties within Chemical, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. After successfully completing the 1 to 2-year Technical Co-op Program, participants will be offered a full-time role, if available.

The position will be based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. All members of the Technical Co-op Program are required to be in-person. There will be limited opportunities for remote work.  

• Support the conduct of research to advance energy conversion technologies at pilot scale
• Participate in the design, assembly, operation, and maintenance of laboratory, bench, and pilot scale test facilities
• Support documenting as well as analysis and interpretation of test results and experimental data
• Assist in execution of research projects in the areas of innovative energy and environmental technologies
• Assist and participate in operation of test equipment including plant automation software
• Assist with test article design and fabrication
• This role will include supporting the evaluation and testing of low carbon bio-energy conversion, reforming combustion, gasification, and membrane separation systems, components with high heat flux heat exchange, fluidized beds, particulate solids transport, and membrane separation, in addition to test article design and fabrication
• Perform other duties as assigned

• Effective use of hand and powered tools and other workshop equipment.
• Ability to follow test protocols and operating procedures.
• Experience in testing mechanical and/or chemical processes or similar class work.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Understanding and commitment to safety in test environments
• Ability to think logically and apply knowledge to new and unique situations
• Handle operations and basic measurements related to gas piping, pressurized connections, and laboratory setup
• Good organizational skills and ability to work independently
• Able to lift 50 pounds and perform standard work in field and laboratory spaces

• Active student at a local college working towards a degree in chemical, electrical, industrial, or mechanical engineering
• Demonstrated ability to work well with others in a team environment
• Basic skills in electrical wiring, mechanical systems, and/or plumbing required
• Knowledge of computer operations of MS Office word processing and spreadsheets are desired
• Familiarity with chemical process modeling and/or design and fabrication of mechanical or electrical systems is a plus
