The mission of the Ecosystems Mission Area of the U.S. Geological Survey is to work with others to provide the scientific understanding and technologies needed to support the sound management and conservation of our Nation's biological resources. Fulfilling this mission depends on effectively balancing the immediate need for information to guide management of biological resources with the need for technical assistance and long-range, strategic information to understand and predict emerging patterns and trends in ecological systems. Ecosystem Mission Area programs were developed to provide the appropriate depth and breadth of objective science to meet the information needs of natural resource managers, who encounter many complex environmental problems driven by an array of biological, physical, social, and economic forces that interact across diverse temporal and spatial scales.
The purpose of this task order is to perform field data collection and data analysis of algal and water quality data throughout the Great Lakes. The candidate shall participate in field data and sample collection, sample preservation and shipping, data analysis, and integration of multiple data sets.
This position will require the candidate to work onboard 25-foot research vessels assisting in the collection and interpretation of water quality, chemical, and biological samples. The candidate will be expected to assist in all facets of field operations, sampling, data collection, as well as to participate in shared maintenance duties. The candidate is also required to work in a laboratory where sample filtration, preservation, inventory, shipping, analysis, equipment maintenance, interpretation and data basing tasks will occur. Additional tasks include, but are not limited to:
Assist with Field Work
Assist with Laboratory Sample Processing and Equipment Maintenance
The candidate shall assist with maintenance and calibration of EXO2 sounds, light sensors, and field equipment; process, filter, and preserve, as needed for each sample type, water, sediment, and biological samples for shipment to analyzing laboratories, storage, or analysis. The candidate shall also prepare for field work by assembling and inspecting equipment and supplies
Assist with Data Management
The candidate shall conduct data entry and quality awareness checks on field and lab data and sample inventories, and maintain organized physical and electronic back-up copies of field and lab datasheets.
Adherence to All Appropriate Branch and Center Procedures
The candidate shall adhere to all pertinent GLSC procedures and guidelines. This includes but is not limited to the research studies formulated by GLSC scientists, and following all GLSC safety and administrative guidance.
