Career Tax Consultant - Unemployment Insurance (Finance)



The Career Tax Consultant is able to assist clients and state/federal agencies to ensure tax compliance when reporting changes to various taxing jurisdictions. Tax compliance may include, but is not limited to: business acquisitions, reorganizations, mergers, divestitures, and payroll amendments. The Career Tax Consultant will evaluate the tax impact of employee movements and offer recommendations. They must be able to analyze, compute, and apply for refundable taxes that have been overpaid due to wage base restarts.

What you will do

  • Coach, train, and mentor team members in tax return amendments and IRS processes and procedures
  • Investigate issues posed by internal and external clients
  • Perform special projects and related duties as assigned
  • Perform historical client audits which include, but is not limited to: Wage base/Professional Employer Organization (PEO) recoveries; Tax rate experience revisions; Complete all applicable audit paperwork
  • Complete agency follow up for paperwork status and/or confirmation of refund or credit
  • Accurately complete complex tax impact analyses
  • Produce invoices and milestone trackers for revenue recognition
  • Provide technical guidance/direction to department/team on client tax matters
  • Provide consulting expertise to clients
  • Work with clients to collect and analyze UC tax data to resolve disputes and develop beneficial solutions
  • Provide leadership and direction in critical or escalating tax matters and provide guidance to staff and clients
  • Assist in preparation of appeals/arguments on behalf of clients to rectify UC tax issues

What experience you will need

  • Certified Public Account (CPA)
  • Advanced knowledge of unemployment tax and federal (IRS) processes and procedures
  • 3+ years of payroll tax or unemployment tax experience (OR) have a Finance/Accounting degree with 3+ years of professional experience
  • Project management/tracking experience preferred
  • Good multitasking, organization, and prioritization skills
  • Ability to comprehend technical information
  • Analyze data, draw conclusions, and recommend solutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Good and prompt decision-making capabilities
  • Mathematical aptitude and application skills
  • Experience using corporate software systems
  • Ability to interact and present data clearly to various work group levels
  • Desire to develop others

What could set you apart
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of Google G Suite and Workfront a plus
  • Solid Business Writing skills preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of business unit applications
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) a plus
