Assistant General Counsel – Product Development and Innovation

The successful candidate for this Assistant General Counsel position will be an experienced lawyer with sound business and legal judgment and experience advising on product development and innovation, ideally within the consumer financial and/or data industry.  This candidate should have experience working through different stages of product and solution development using unique and differentiated inputs, from concept to customer delivery.  This position will report directly to a Vice President & Group Counsel and will provide day-to-day legal and regulatory advisory support to the Company's U.S. business units, with a specific focus on support for new product reviews, data use and governance and privacy.  

This position requires a broad business perspective and the ability to apply this perspective to legal analysis and problem-solving to devise innovative solutions that meet business needs.  All work will require a "business" as well as a "legal" approach and the successful candidate will demonstrate capabilities in anticipating legal issues, accepting and effectively resolving projects and creative solutions to solve any legal or business challenges. The successful candidate will be able to get up to speed quickly and balance the strategic thinking necessary to deliver legal services that align to the business needs. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal guidance for multiple U.S. business units regarding product development, data use and custom solution design, with a particular emphasis on use of existing and new data assets in new and novel ways. 
  • Analyze complex product and data use proposals in the context of contractual and regulatory parameters.
  • Conduct research on processes and procedures for existing products and services, as well as critical thinking on alternative solutions and design within the enterprise risk profile.
  • Advise the business on compliance with U.S. laws and regulations impacting the business, products and customers, including FCRA, GLBA, ECOA, CCPA and other consumer protection and consumer reporting laws and regulations.
  • Provide support and guidance on implementation of new legal or regulatory requirements.
  • Effectively collaborating with business, other in-house attorneys and various stakeholders within the company.

Position Requirements:

  • Ability to understand complex laws and apply those concepts to challenging business and data constructs and processes.
  • Experience addressing data use issues related to data and financial products and services to ensure compliance with laws and regulations, consumer protection laws, privacy frameworks and other legal requirements.
  • Familiarity with data governance and data management in a fast-paced, innovative company with a significant volume of differently regulated data assets.
  • Law degree from ABA accredited law school and membership in good standing of any state bar.
  • Minimum of 7-9 years of relevant experience, preferably at a large law firm and/or corporate legal department in the financial services industry.
  • Ability to see the big picture while executing on the appropriate details.
  • Must be able to work independently, exercise sound judgment and interface directly with upper-level management.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a fast paced, demanding environment.
