Summary:
The City of Fort Collins' Utilities Finance team is seeking an intern to support the organization during the summer of 2025. Ideally, the position will start in May and continue through August. The selected candidate can expect to work up to 40 hours per week, depending on scope and requirements of specific job assignments. Hours can be flexible and there is potential for remote-based work. This role will give the candidate an exposure to the full spectrum of municipal utility finance functions: accounting, budgeting, financial planning & analysis, and grants administration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern can expect to contribute towards 2 or 3 projects from departments within Utility Services. Assignments will be tailored based on the prioritized needs of the organization, as well as the specific background, experience and development objectives of the selected candidate. Participation may be as an individual contributor, team-member or even project lead (for certain project segments). Projects will be drawn from service area priority work items and could include assignments related to:
-Budget Report Development
- Monthly Financial Reporting
- Long Term Capital Planning
-Budgeting For Outcomes (BFO) analytical support
-Departmental process improvement initiatives

The candidate can expect a variety of work environments including individual research and analysis, meetings and team collaboration sessions, attendance and/or participation at service area meetings.

-Intermediate skill level in Excel and Microsoft Office software.
-Understanding of statistical analysis.
-Demonstrates critical thinking in approach to problem solving, issue resolution and solution development drawing upon business acumen and perspective gained from education and experience.
-Ability to summarize and communicate financial issues both orally and in writing to supervisors and stakeholders.
-Intermediate data query, extraction, and normalizing skills. Capable of incorporating and utilizing data in a variety of reporting tools and financial software packages.
-Ability to communicate effectively with a broad audience

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree or college level courses leading up to a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, economics, public policy or similar field (or equivalent experience) is desired, but not required. Experience with Microsoft Excel, Power BI, Python, R, statistics and data analysis.

Language and Presentation Skills:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Capability to appropriately respond to common inquiries and requests from supervisors and stakeholders. Effectively create presentations and communicate to select audience.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to collect data and records, deliver information and report clearly. Capable of interpreting a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
