Computational Physicist ∞ (Maplewood, MN) (Engineering)

Job Summary:

The person hired for the position will develop solutions for complex problems in managing electromagnetic waves.  Elements of the position include working with our group lab and division partners to understand complex technical problems and use computational modeling to assess technical feasibility, develop solutions, and prototype.  Be part of a team chartered to invent and develop innovate new technologies and product concepts aligned with the Electronics and Energy strategic drivers of: Changing Display, Digitization, Future Energy and Automotive Electrification.  The position affords the opportunity to be part of a world class organization dedicated to developing products and processes.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Solving complex electromagnetic problems in the visible to near IR wavelengths using sound engineering, materials, and physics principles
  • Developing and executing code as needed
  • Analyzing results and use to validate modeling predictions
  • Completing deliverables per new technology and product projects plans
  • Scouting new market and technology spaces
  • Collaborating with 3M Corporate Research Lab
  • Documenting work via technical reports and presentations
  • Developing technical rapport with customers
  • Publishing technical/journal articles
  • Filing intellectual property and developing trade secrets
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications:

  • Possess a Doctoral degree or higher in a Science or Engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited university
  • Experience working in a private, public, government or military environment developing solutions to complex electromagnetic problems in the visible to near IR wavelengths

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Applied Physics or Electrical Engineering
  • Strong knowledge base with mechanisms, materials and electromagnetic principles in the visible and near IR wavelength
  • Knowledge of Meta-surfaces and diffractive optics
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems and implement solutions
  • Understand the relationship between materials, structure, and function
  • Mechanical and electromagnetic aptitude and skills using a hands-on approach
  • Comfortable writing and understanding computational code
  • Innovation skills such as developing new ideas and alternate solutions
  • Ability to learn and apply new knowledge quickly
  • Self-directed

Location:  Maplewood, MN

Travel:  May include up to 15% travel domestic/international
