MAJOR FUNCTIONS
This is advanced- skilled work in the operation of heavy construction equipment, heavy tractors and earth moving equipment and vehicles. Duties include the performance of manual labor tasks. Work is performed under general supervision. This is an emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare repair and recover the City before, during and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, ice storm, etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Operates equipment and/or machines: front-end loader, bucket truck, lift truck, small transport trucks, large and small dump trucks, power broom/sweeper, back-hoe, Gradall etc.
Occasionally operates smaller equipment.
Performs manual labor tasks.
Performs routine first maintenance and checks the equipment assigned to operate in performance of work.
Performs maintenance work found in the Maintenance Worker classification.
Directs and flags traffic.
Must be available for work outside of regular working hours when called upon to assist on-call staff or when required by Supervisor or Mgmt. (overtime).
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the effective operation of medium and heavy equipment.
Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and of effective precautionary measures necessary to avoid accident.
Knowledge of the hazards involved in the use of heavy equipment and of the safety precautions to be taken.
Ability to understand and carry out general instructions relating to construction and maintenance operations.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Skill in the operation of heavy construction equipment, small equipment, power and non-powered tools.
Physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous tasks under varying weather conditions.
Knowledge of how to set up work zones and safe operation around traffic and pedestrians/ public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Supervisors, subordinates, associates and public.
Ability to establish grades with surveying equipment or instruments.
May be required to lead a crew of State Inmates.
Knowledge of Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and work zone safety.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
Three (3) years' experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy, medium and light equipment of primary assignment.
Ability to read, write and understand written and oral instructions.
Must possess and maintain a current Florida CDL Class B License w/ air brakes endorsement, or be able to obtain one within the first six (6) months of employment (stipulation to hire).
A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
