Director, Engineering (OIEC) (Finance)



Position Summary:
The Engineering Director within the Operational Innovation & Excellence Center team at Stella-Jones is a senior-level, working manager responsible not only for leading a team of engineers in executing complex capital projects across Stella-Jones, but also for driving continuous improvement across engineering, operations, and innovation.

This newly established role within the OIEC is pivotal in shaping the future of engineering, R&D, and technology development for Stella-Jones. The Engineering Manager will lead the identification, testing, development, and implementation of process and equipment improvements across facilities, particularly in wood treating operations, automation, robotics, and other transformative technologies-supporting our broader strategy to become a future-ready organization. This role will be ideally based out of either our Lenexa, Kansas or Montréal (Canada) HQ office.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate and drive research & development, technology adoption, and process improvements across treatment plants and operations-including automation, robotics, and emerging technologies.
  • Serve as technical SME in support of operational and strategic innovation initiatives.
  • Lead and develop a team of Senior and Junior Project Engineers supporting multiple facilities across North America, including Canada.
  • Implement standard engineering practices and documentation controls.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, safety standards, and internal policies.
  • Collaborate with procurement, safety, and operations to deliver efficient project execution.
  • Drive execution of engineering design, budgeting, permitting, and construction for major capital projects.
  • Partner and coordinate with the PMO leader to ensure engineering scopes align with business goals and support the successful delivery of projects.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering required (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical preferred).
  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license a plus.
  • 10+ years in engineering roles, with 5+ years of project leadership or PMO experience.
  • Proven ability to manage teams and interface across departments.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and project reporting skills.
