Position Overview
The School Crossing Guard is responsible for ensuring the safe passage of pedestrians, particularly children, across streets and intersections, especially before and after school hours. They achieve this by directing traffic, monitoring for potential hazards, and educating pedestrians on traffic safety.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • School Crossing Guards assess traffic flow, halt vehicles to create safe crossing gaps, and guide pedestrians across the street.
  • Direct traffic, monitoring for potential hazards, and educating pedestrians on traffic safety
  • Inform pedestrians, especially children, about traffic rules and safe crossing practices.
  • Vigilant for unsafe driving behaviors, like speeding, and potential hazards like construction or obstructed crosswalks.
  • Communicate clearly with drivers and pedestrians, using hand signals and other tools to direct traffic and ensure safety.
  • Document incidents, like traffic violations or unsafe pedestrian behavior.
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions, necessitating physical stamina and adaptability.
  • Interact with children, parents, and the wider community, promoting safe practices and fostering a positive environment.
  • Adhere to specific crossing guard protocols, which may include specific steps for initiating and completing a crossing, as well as using safety equipment like stop signs and vests.
  • Respond to unexpected situations, such as accidents or sudden traffic changes, remaining calm and taking appropriate action.
  • Consistent presence at designated crossing locations is crucial for ensuring pedestrian safety.

KIPP Capital Region
  • Perform other duties as outlined by the Chief Operating Officer
  • Complies with all charter, federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including the NYS Department of Education, Department of Health, and NYS Office of Children and Family Services
  • Adheres to organization policies and procedures; promotes and supports mission, vision, and values, including developing and participating in internal surveys and data collection for continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Current, valid driver's license and license must remain valid throughout employment to meet the transportation requirements of the job.
  • Working knowledge of traffic laws and regulations is preferred.
  • Prior experience working in schools and urban communities is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work during school arrival times (7:00am-9:00am) and dismissal times (2:30pm-4:30pm) daily.
  • Aptitude to create and work within an inclusive environment that honors and supports a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.

  • Prolonged periods working outdoors in various weather conditions, necessitating physical stamina and adaptability.
  • Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school, parking lots, roads, and other facilities as needed.
  • Good health and physical fitness are fundamental in the exercise of the functions of a School Crossing Guard . The holder is required to be in a state of health and fitness to not impair their ability to carry out the functions of the position
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee needs to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use fingers to type, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance; stoop/bend and reach, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk, hear.
  • Dexterity requires writing and operating standard office machines such as computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, phones, and calculators.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.

KIPP Capital Region offers a competitive pay at $18.75-$24.50 hourly.

Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience relevant to the role and longevity within the KIPP network. KIPP Capital Region will evaluate and determine the step/level a new hire will be placed within our teacher salary scale at point of hire.
