Assistant Archaeologist to the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (R&D)



The Assistant Archaeologist to the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) is responsible for aiding the THPO in managing, protecting, and preserving the Osage Nation's cultural resources and related interests which is a critical function for reestablishing and retaining Osage sovereignty within our ancestral territory, which includes 618 counties in 15 states.

  • Master's degree in Anthropology, with specialization in archaeology required

  • Demonstrated capabilities in archaeological, anthropological, and historical research skills including research design, analysis and reporting and data collection

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Archaeological Resources and Protection Act (ARPA), the Antiquities Act of 1906 (AA), the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), and other federal and state CRM legislation

  • Must have experience with archaeological surveying and cultural resource management (CRM); and, the incumbent will be expected to conduct reviews and comments on National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 compliance notifications, Archaeological Resources and Protection Act (ARPA) notifications, and other federal and state CRM notices

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and participate in negotiating teams necessary for the completion of intergovernmental agreements, cultural resource plans, and consultation protocols

  • Knowledge and ability to manage data and use confidential cultural resources
  • Familiarity with North American prehistory, Osage Nation history, and tribally sensitive archaeological methods is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Native American communities

  • High level of personal integrity and ethics

  • High level of problem solving skills

  • High level of technical writing skills required

  • Familiarity with the concepts of budget development and compliance with Tribal budgets

  • Familiarity with planning concepts and processes including but not limited to program planning

  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills, including travel to conferences and training sessions

  • Requires ability to use Microsoft Office Suite programs

  • Good interpersonal communication and team work skills

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check

  • Must be able to pass drug/alcohol testing

  • Must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record- may be required to drive GSA or tribal vehicles
