3D Systems
Additive Manufacturing Healthcare Build Engineer (Finance)
The 3D Systems site in Littleton, Colorado is expanding rapidly and needs a skilled Additive Manufacturing Engineer to augment the existing Production Planning and Coordination team under the direction of the Production Planning Supervisor. The mission of the Production Planning team is to plan and prepare builds for our fleet of 3D printing machines. Our pace of growth is only matched by the pace at which our customers expect their new and innovative products to be delivered.
Organization
As part of the Healthcare unit of 3D Systems, the Littleton facility acts as a service bureau to enable customers without the expertise, capital, or desire to additively manufacture their products. We are experts in digital workflows, patient-specific devices, and five different kinds of 3D printing. The Manufacturing department serves both the Virtual Surgical Planning as well as the Contract Manufacturing product lines with plastic and metal additive manufacturing.
Performance Objectives
The following performance objectives will determine job success for this position:
Prepare Builds for Patient Specific Implant cases : Review design proposals from our customers and design a support structure to 3D print them in either laser or electron beam melting (EBM) platforms. Review common implant anatomy cases and develop a strategy for supporting that can be shared with others as a best practice. Consider heat dissipation, mass, and build orientation to minimize stress and distortion using 3DXpert or other analytical tools. Evaluate failures and make changes to documented support strategy. Reduce scrap associated with support design deficiency.
Prepare Builds for Production Medical Devices : Review the weekly schedule of planned builds and coordinate with other build preparation personnel to ensure all builds are prepared using Magics or internal preparation software at least one day in advance. Supplement Medical Device build preparation as required. Follow build preparation work instructions. Adjust builds and files to meet dynamic production plans that may change at the last minute due to customer priority or machine availability. Make files available to the production floor so machine operators can start the next build in a timely fashion.
Create Build Documentation: Using released traveler templates and designated label printing system, create the blank Device History Record to be filled out by the production and quality control teams. Ensure labels match the traveler, that the build ID is correct, the machine number is accurate, and the quantities of parts prepared on the build match the quantity required to fulfill the customer PO. Follow DHR creation checklist to ensure accuracy.
Prepare Builds for On Demand "Fastlane" Projects : Evaluate suitability of submitted projects for simple manufacturing and ensure that the project does not warrant participation of the Advanced Manufacturing team. Design support structures for each unique case and coordinate with production planners to place the project on a machine with the designated material (titanium, aluminum, stainless steel, etc.). Create appropriate traveler and job documentation to ensure accurate processing and cost accounting.
Assist in File Transfer with New Projects - Move and rename all files that are transferred to production after the customer runs through the development cycle. This position will work closely with the Project Engineer of the transferred project to ensure all items are ready for production. This assistance will also be needed when customers' revisions are updated.
The successful candidate will have:
- completed their undergraduate degree in engineering required.
- have at least 1 year of experience in a manufacturing environment and be able to communicate with a diverse team.
- Ability to manage their time and prioritize tasks
- Experience with additive manufacturing and Magics is a plus.
- The ability to manipulate files and design parts in a 3D design environment like SolidWorks will be beneficial to completing the above performance objectives.
Documentation is important for our medical device customers, experience in a regulated industry is preferred.
