SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Unit Clerk is a representative of the hospital. The Unit Clerk is responsible for coordinating communications, performing unit-receptionist activities, and accountable for routine clerical activities on a nursing unit. The Unit Clerk is responsible for directing the flow of information between nursing and medical staff, patient and family, and healthcare team and support services.

Previous unit clerk experience or equivalent preferred.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge and skill required to perform the job responsibilities.

PRINCIPAL JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Performs unit-receptionist activities including but not limited to: coordinates incoming, outgoing, and intra-unit communications; handles customer requests; may determine room assignments for patients, and inter-unit transfers; tracks assignment of staff due to census, etc. Coordinates clinical data collection via fax, printers, and tube system, and assures that documentation is placed on medical record and/or distributed to appropriate personnel. Performs discharge/transfer functions. Collects and enters appropriate data. Maintains medical record. Respects patient confidentiality. Assures completeness of chart (physician signature on orders and transcribed on documents). Thins and stuffs charts as needed. Copies charts as needed. Puts charts in Universal Chart Order before sending to Medical Records. Transcribes physician orders accurately as delegated by registered nurse. Takes charts to Medical Records to be copied and picks up films/CDs from Radiology. Attends monthly unit clerk meetings. Assists in orientation of new personnel. Maintains daily unit worksheet (ADT board and AWARIX). Emergency Department Unit Clerks responsible for maintaining Tracking Board. Works overtime as needed. Completes and updates Medical Pages as needed. Communicates with appropriate individuals regarding clean and dirty beds. Performs computer order/entry functions. Enters patient billing as required. Coordinates the ordering of supplies per par levels. Provides friendly assistance to patient's family and visitors. Answers phones and nurse call lights courteously, and quickly addresses the caller's needs. Observes universal precautions and isolation procedures. Maintains aseptic technique. Performs limited patient care activities. Transports ambulatory/wheelchair patients as directed by the RN. Keeps work area neat and clean. Observes and initiates maintenance requisition to repair equipment, furniture, and building fixtures. Performs other duties as assigned. May cross-train as health care associate, monitor technician or patient safety companion . Utilizes HMHP Intranet reference materials and policy/procedure manuals to facilitate job. Documents according to hospital policy using apoproved safe hospital abbreviations. Holds self, employees and co-workers accountable for keeping patient safety the first priority in performing the essential duties of their jobs.
