MAJOR FUNCTIONS
This is a specialized and highly responsible position for maintaining the receipt, storage, transfer and disposition of property and evidence in accordance with department policies, city ordinances and applicable state and federal laws. The Property/Evidence Custodian receives general supervision and direction from the Crime Scene Investigations Sergeant.
This position is classified non-exempt in accordance with the City's municipal code 2-166 and FLSA standards and is subject to civil service.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Verify all associated paperwork and property or evidence submissions to the department property evidence section are in compliance with department intake methods.
Process and retain accurate, orderly records accounting for the receipt, storage, transfer and disposition of said property and evidence.
Prepare written reports to mandated standards.
Conduct case reviews to determine property dispositions.
Maintain security and integrity of evidence storage facilities.
Insure the rightful return and transfer of evidence.
Conducts periodic audits of facilities and submissions.
Destruction of evidence pursuant to court order.
Maintain accounting of monies in evidence and follows transfers through proper chain to department accounts as required by departmental policy and accreditation standards.
Ensure submissions to crime labs for evidence processing are packaged appropriately and necessary documents are complete an accurate.
Process dispositions regarding seized evidence that have been forfeited, ordered returned, or ordered to be destroyed by the courts and forward through the chain of command.
Advertise as required by state law the legal posting requirements for found property and maintain records associated with such postings.
May be called to testify as to departmental procedures and chain of custody records.
Ability to use logic and sound judgment.
Must have a working knowledge of departmental databases and have the ability to conduct analytical research.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with supervisors, co-workers and respective agencies.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of evidence records and dispositions of cases.
Require regular lifting, carrying, pushing or moving of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolding, ramps in a safe manner.

Ability to maintain ordering for necessary office and processing supplies for the Crime Scene Investigations Section.
Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
· Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and department Records Management systems such as Spillman.
· Knowledge of departmental policies, city ordinances and state or federal laws regarding evidence procedures.
A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Summary:
Occasionally - Lifting/carrying 10 to 40 lbs. or less, push/pull 25 lbs. or less, bending, squat/kneel, walk, bend, stoop, reach above shoulder and reach outward.
Constantly - sitting, standing, answering phones, handling/fingering, and type/keyboard functions. Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction) acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid), ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
