The virus program at Cornell University's NYSAES, under the supervision of Dr. Marc Fuchs, works on viral diseases of vegetable and fruit crops with a major emphasis on the identification and characterization of emerging viruses, and the development of innovative management strategies.
Under the direction of the supervisor, the responsibilities of this position are to provide support for ongoing projects dealing with virus testing in plant tissue samples, epidemiological investigations and virus population structure as well as genetic variability studies by using serological, molecular biology-based, and classical plant virology techniques. The employee will assist research efforts for the optimization of detection methodologies and advancement of our understanding of the ecology of viruses, assist and perform routine analysis of plant samples for viruses in the laboratory, greenhouse or field in accordance with established protocols, and provide organized, accurate and reliable reports to supervisor. Maintenance of detailed and accurate written records of results and participation at regular lab meetings is also expected.
This is a 39 hour per week, six month term position with possibility of renewal contingent on secured funding and successful performance.
Required Qualifications:
Formal training beyond a high school diploma of six months to one year, or associate's degree, with six to twelve months previous lab experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to maintain excellent records with specific attention to detail of results and follow established protocols. Ability to work semi-independently based on a solid understanding of basic protocols and objectives of projects in a coordinated fashion with other members of the research program. Must be personable, flexible, possess excellent communication (both oral and written) and organizational skills and take pride in work. Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with other co-workers. Proven computer literacy skills (Microsoft applications) required. Ability to work well with a variety of diverse personalities. Ability to understand the goals and objectives of the program and to identify unusual or interesting observations and to bring them to the attention of the project leader. Sound judgment, excellent reasoning and decision-making skills. Must be able to work under pressure with a great deal of initiative. Must have demonstrated ability to handle sensitive/confidential material and information in a professional manner. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associates degree or equivalent experience in a laboratory setting. Two or more years' lab experience. Experience with immunosorbent and genetic techniques. Experience in a high-throughput laboratory setting.
